Muhammad Arief (Sayef Muhammad Billah), the son of a poor family in Sumenep, Madura, is very fond of science, especially physics. Despite living far from big cities and going to a school that’s lacking facilities, Arief studies physics dilligently.
He lives with his father Muslat (Lukman Sardi), a former salt farmer turned to an odd truck driver due to lean seasons in salt fields. Arief’s mother, Salmah (Helmalia Putri), is forced to work as an immigrant worker in Saudi Arabia. Arief works in a repair shop after school, saving money in order to find her mother. Arief is aided by Cak Alul (Sudjiwo Tedjo0, the kampong’s ruffian.
At school Ibu Tari Hayat (Revalina S Temat), the physics teacher, sees Arief’s great talent. The Minang woman, in love with and committed to education world, is willing to stay high and dry in Madura for the sake of brilliant stars among her pupils. Thanks to Ibu Tari’s encouragement, Arief takes part in the selection of science olympiad that’s about to be held in Singapore. But Arief has a hidden agenda: to find his mother.
The selection is done by Pak Tio Yohanes (Ferry Salim) in Jakarta, assisted by Deborah Sinaga (Febby Febiola). Arief befriends Muhammad Thamrin (Angga Putra) and Clara Annabela (Dinda Hauw). He’s also at each other’s throat with Bima Wangsa (Rangga Raditya) and Erwin Manik (Rendy Ahmad).
Arief becomes acquainted with Cak Kumis (Indro Warkop), a ketoprak (a traditional dish) peddler from Madura who gives him a life lesson. Meanwhile Pak Tio always boosts Arief’s and other participant’s morale by imparting a belief he calls MESTAKUNG or semesta mendukung (the universe conspires for you). The core of the belief says that when someone is certain, focused and works hard to achieve something, he or she will indeed achieve it because the whole of the universe conspires for him or her.
